Vojta violinist

Amazing Night in the Dragon Hotel Montgomery
====================================
'Vojta' - Violinist and MUCH more !!

We strolled down to the Dragon Hotel here in Montgomery and listened tp a live session by 'Vojta' a very talented musician from the Czech Republic. His music is gradually built up in layers by live recording 'loops' from his various instruments and grows into the most wonderfully mesmeric melodies I've ever heard. So evocative and wonderful. Here is his first 'live' video recordings taken just over a year ago in the UK... Very special indeed !
https://www.facebook.com/vojta.violinist/videos/1757275794541971/

Check out my very first live video! Two weeks ago I found myself in the beautiful English city of Brighton!! Since I've been here I've been busking and gigging non stop, doing what I love. I've made some awesome new friends one of whom offered me the chance to record my first live performance! Hope you guys enjoy it, would love to hear what you think 🙂

Special thanks to Ren for recording and producing this video.

' The Flying Frenchman ' - Amazing control of 12 horses

This is really amazing !!!!
===================
' The Flying Frenchman - Lorenzo International '
Just 1.5 hours travel yesterday out from Montgomery took us to the 'Royal Welsh Show' at Buith Wells in Powys, Wales where we saw this totally awe inspiring main field display. The 'Flying Frenchman' stood and balanced unattached, on 2 horses and commanded a total of 12 horses in a fantastic routine of co-ordination the likes of which I have never seen before. Totally beautiful and spell binding ! Unfortunately I did not have my camcorder or camera.. but this video compilation, shot in Europe, shows the routine that we witnessed. Totally mind-blowing indeed 🙂 Enjoy !!!

Caffyns Rolls Royce sill plate presentation
==================================
Cloverlands Model Car Museum played host to a very special presentation this week, as John Weston-Smith presented a rare and valuable Rolls Royce sill plate to museum patron, Gillian Rogers.

After a pleasurable visit to Cloverlands on May Day, John Weston-Smith returned straight home to read “Driving through the decades” by Gillian and Valerie Rogers. He was struck by how many places and experiences were shared between his own lifelong car enthusiasm and Gillian’s. “Gillian has visited and taken part in lots of events at places which I knew well as I also lived in Kent and Sussex through the ‘60s and ‘70s.”

“One thing I noticed is that Gillian worked at one time at Caffyns, a long-established dealer in the South East. In fact my first Rolls Royce was a Silver Wraith which had originally been sold by Caffyns in Eastbourne. Although when new it was not itself fitted with dealer metal cill

The presentation took place surrounded by the Cloverlands collection, and watched by Cloverlands’ custodians, volunteers and supporters. Gillian’s partner Max Tomlinson began straight away to plan a bespoke oak plinth for displaying the sill plate, and all in attendance continued to reminisce about their decades of enjoyment of motoring in all its guises, not least cleaning cars in the “posh area” as teenagers – much more lucrative than the traditional paper round! 🙂

Mr Weston-Smith also brought with him many interesting catalogues and magazines for the museum, as well as a unique collection of motoring memorabilia which will be on display at Cloverlands soon - but of that the details will remain under our (ten-gallon) hats for just a little longer…. Watch this space…. 😉

Rock Mill, Abermule - NGS open day

We visited Rock Mill, a private garden opened for visitors over the weekend near Abermule Wales under the NGS (National Garden Scheme). It's only 5 miles from Montgomery and occupies land on either side of the river Mule with extensive gardens, 2 stone bridges and river side wooded walks. The private gardens are a wonder to explore. Tea and Cakes were available during our visit and the views in the steep enclosed valley were exceptional. A truly lovely place and highly recommended to visit next time it is opened up to the public.

MEG Litter pick day - 8th APRIL 2017
-------------------------------------------------
8 volunteer litter pickers from Montgomery spent 2 hours on Saturday 8th April 2017 in bright sunshine clearing litter from locations around the town and local walking routes. Bags, Holding Hoops, Litter picker sticks, gloves and hi-vis waistcoats were provided by 'Keep Wales Tidy'. Interestingly... most of the litter collected from the Castle area, lanes and slopes mainly consisted of quite old glass / plastic bottles and drinks tins.

This is good news as it shows that very little recent litter has been deposited and our visitors can now enjoy a litter free Montgomery visit, plus our townsfolk can have even more pride in our lovely location and town. MEG (Montgomery Energy Group) plan to repeat this exercise every few months as this will help keep our environment looking at its best in support of the town's 'Destination Montgomery' scheme.

Dragon Big Band

We drove out to Church Stoke last night to the 'Horse and Jockey' pub for a drink while being entertained by the 'Dragon Big Band' - their regular Wednesday night live entertainment.

Their lineup last night consisted of a 12 strong mix of musicians playing keyboard, drums and guitars as well as a good selection of Saxophones, Trumpets and slide trombones to complete the big band sound.

The 'Dragon Big Band' perform an entertaining mix of Swing, Jazz and big Band favourites with familiar tunes added into their set along the way.

It's a nice way to spend a Wednesday evening and their performance is usually 8pm through to 10.30pm ..

Ring the 'Horse and Jockey' to confirm times and dates on T:01588 620060

Murder Mystery Evening in Montgomery town
===================================
Last night guests of Lord Louche were entertained in his 80 room manor here in the centre of Montgomery ( which incidentally looks very much like our very own Ivy House Cafe 😉 ) as part of a nationwide evening of murder mystery raising funds for the Macmillan charity. The Dinner party, set in the early 1920's, set the host 'Lord Louche' alongside his long suffering wife 'Lady La-DiDah', her long time cook 'Mrs Beetroot', their faithful - but somewhat clumsy - butler 'Lenny Oopsidaisy', a rich American colleague 'Neville Loudmouth', a fluent french speaking Marchioness De Fromage, a somewhat shady Reverand Ruff and a selection of other guests. Suspicions became elevated when it was announced by the butler that he had found a young 25 years old - budding American actress dead on the bathroom floor. A series of confessions and revelations by various guests then followed as the intrigue mounted following a

Montgomery Wales

Welcome back to our mayor Eric Fairbrother who has been in Hungary to celebrate the bicentenary of Hungarian poet János Arany. Arany wrote the 1857 epic ballad "A walesi bárdok", telling of the slaughter of 500 bards at Montgomery Castle by Edward I, which is well-known in Hungary and learnt by all school children there.

Eric was invited to attend a special performance of Karl Jenkins' cantata "The Bards of Wales", based on Arany's historical and allegorical poem. The Freemen of Montgomery awarded the honour of posthumous Freeman status to the poet, and Eric presented the scroll on behalf of the Freemen in Budapest.

The poem in the original Hungarian, and English translation by Peter Zollman (1997) [Zollman's translation was presented to the National Library of Wales in 2007 and used by Jenkins]

Town hill walk in February snow

Walked up Town Hill Montgomery this morning at sunrise and captured some really lovely scenes. Montgomery town had a light dusting of snow but at the top of Town Hill the snow was 2 inches deep. The yellow tinted sun created some really pleasant hues and the snow made the monument at the top of the hill appear crisp and wonderful. Just a few hours later it turned to rain and washed it all away.

It was one of those magical mornings where I reckon I could have simply placed the camera on the ground, kicked it and it would have taken a fabulous photo 🙂

Montgomery Wales

The Bards of Wales

Montgomery's Mayor, Eric Fairbrother, will head to Budapest on Tuesday to attend a special performance of a musical interpretation of "The Bards of Wales" by Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkins.

"The Bards of Wales is an epic ballad written by the Hungarian poet János Arany (1817-1882) which describes the slaughter by Edward I of five hundred Welsh bards at a banquet in Montgomery Castle, for refusing to sing his praises as their conqueror. The work is allegorical, addressing the trials of the Hungarian people, and is now regarded as the national ballad of Hungary, well known throughout Hungary and taught in all Hungarian schools."

The performance will mark the bicentenary of the birth of the poet János Arany and, as a gesture of goodwill, the Freemen of Montgomery have awarded the honour of posthumous Freeman status to the poet. Hungary is delighted by this, and Eric will have the honour of presenting the Freeman scroll on behalf of the Town at a ceremony in

"Montgomery is at the heart of a unique cultural crossover linking Wales and Hungary. We are the only town in Wales to have this link, and it is important in maintaining our friendship with our neighbours in Europe. This will be a national event in Hungary and will bring some good publicity for Montgomery both here in Wales and in Hungary." - Eric Fairbrother ... See more
