Welcome back to our mayor Eric Fairbrother who has been in Hungary to celebrate the bicentenary of Hungarian poet János Arany. Arany wrote the 1857 epic ballad "A walesi bárdok", telling of the slaughter of 500 bards at Montgomery Castle by Edward I, which is well-known in Hungary and learnt by all school children there.
Eric was invited to attend a special performance of Karl Jenkins' cantata "The Bards of Wales", based on Arany's historical and allegorical poem. The Freemen of Montgomery awarded the honour of posthumous Freeman status to the poet, and Eric presented the scroll on behalf of the Freemen in Budapest.
The poem in the original Hungarian, and English translation by Peter Zollman (1997) [Zollman's translation was presented to the National Library of Wales in 2007 and used by Jenkins]
The best-known English translation by Watson Kirkconnell
