Hints of Autumn at Montgomery Castle

Hints of Autumn at Montgomery Castle I always feel pleasantly surprised when a grey morning turns into a glorious afternoon here in mid Wales. It shouldn’t really be a surprise, because most days delight me with a moving display of light and shadow as the sun and clouds move across the sky. It was one of those days when I didn’t think about taking a camera on my walk up to Montgomery Castle, and I wished I had. I did, however, have my mobile phone, and managed to get a reasonable representation of the subtle hints of Autumn that were Continue reading

Autumn in and around Montgomery

Photo of Spectacular Rustgill

Autumn in and around Montgomery Summer in Montgomery is lush, but Autumn is enchanting.  Hedgerows are heavy with berries and woodlands wear their reds and yellows with pride.  September and October are some of the best months to visit Dolforwyn woods , featuring ancient woodland with a great variety of tree species and a bounty of fungi. Roundton Hill nature reserve is also a great place for discovering fungi in the early autumn. See if you can spot Date Waxcap (Hygrocybe spadicea), Pink Waxcap (Hygrocybe calyptriformis) Olive Earthtongue (Microglossum olivaceum) or Violet Coral (Clavaria zollingeri), which is also referred to as the Amethyst Fairy Club. Close-up photo of a bee visiting a Teasel flower

Now that the excitement of the spring and early summer flowers has passed and farmers are well on the way to harvesting their cereal crops, August has a mature feel about it. Dave and I have stopped exploring the hedgerows on foot as other demands have encroached on our time. Therefore, I was delighted to make an excuse to get out there with the Montgomeryshire Field Society this week. The Montgomeryshire Field Society planned to explore Montgomery Castle and the surrounding countryside this August, as part of its Summer programme 2015. They have surveyed and reported on the flora and Continue reading
