Montgomery returns to the Middle Ages The Welsh Marches, the lands bordering England and Wales, were the site of countless bloody skirmishes in the Middle Ages. Back then, you would find a fiercely tribal culture. These borderlands were places to avoid, unless you were ready to risk the inevitable bloodbaths resulting from violent tribal clashes. Welsh Assembly Senedd visit

Welsh Assembly Senedd Visit Montgomeryshire AM unveils painting Montgomery residents took a trip to the Welsh Assembly building in Cardiff for the unveiling of a painting of their Town Crier, Sue Blower, in full ceremonial regalia.  The painting, by local artist Daniel Yeomans of Llandysil, is on prominent display on the top floor. The structurally stunning Senedd building was constructed in 2006 and houses the Welsh Assembly. It is based on the seafront in Cardiff and overlooks wonderful views of the old docks area that has been redeveloped into a vibrant waterfront location. The self catering accommodation includes two wood-floored bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with a single bed and bunk bed. Bank Cottage also features an oak staircase and landing, a modernised bath/shower room, kitchen, dining room and a lounge with wood burner and exposed original beams. Montgomeryshire War Memorial walk A walk from Montgomery up to the Montgomeryshire County War Memorial on Town Hill that overlooks the surrounding area, giving commanding all round views Going: Medium difficulty. Climbs steeply to a high local hilltop. Slippy in damp conditions. Duration: 1.5 hour+ to include taking in the views. Facing the Town Hall, walk around to its rear and head up the narrow road that climbs up past the Dragon Hotel.  It starts off quite steep then levels out a little as you progress. We attended the first of 4 evenings at Powis Castle, Welshpool ( 7 miles from Montgomery ) to view the Illuminated Formal Gardens and captured these colourful photos on our walk around the grounds. Hendomen and Ford of Rhydwhyman walk

Hendomen and Ford of Rhydwhyman walk This is a pleasant circular walk from Montgomery out to Hendomen, the site of a medieval timber motte-and-bailey castle, and down to the River Severn and the Ford of Rhydwhyman – the historic main crossing point between England and Mid Wales. Going:  Easy Distance: 3 miles. The walk takes 2 hours+  including time to take in the views From the Town Hall walk past the shops along Broad Street and out towards the ‘Ivy House’ Cafe.  Turn left onto Princes Street and  take the Newtown road out of Montgomery (B4385).  Keep walking straight on and ignore roads Continue reading

Offa’s Dyke Walk A wonderful walk going back 1200 years  to the manual labour construction of a 177 mile long Earthworks, now a registered Ancient Monument, called Offas’ Dyke. Going: Fairly level easy going. Duration: Allow 2 hours to complete the walk. From the Town Hall walk past the shops along Broad Street and out towards the Ivy House Cafe.  Turn right onto Princes Street and walk out of town ignoring any left or right hand roads.
